Dick, the owner and head technician, started his professional career as an audio engineer having moved to Melbourne in the early noughties. His varied and stressful working life saw him employed in Melbourne and throughout Victoria as a field technician and operator for some of Australia’s largest and most debauched and chaotic events such as the Melbourne Cup, multiple union rallies, and the Christmas Parade.
In an effort to restore some semblance of sanity to his life, Dick decided to follow his inquisitive tendencies down a more tranquil path. He found himself employed as a repair technician for a decent while, which for the most part was inspiring and stabilising. However he still managed to keep a healthy dose of chaos in his life by playing in a few busy bands around Melbourne.
In 2014 this employment had run its course so it was time to go it alone and launch Open Ear Audio. The business began as a backyard venture specialising in speaker repairs and steadily took on a wider variety of work. Shortly thereafter a new premises was set up in Northcote until this busy little workshop needed to expand again.
Now well established in Fairfield, Open Ear Audio has grown into a leading audio equipment repair centre. Directors Dick and Tracy Straight are grateful to be in a position where they are employing some excellent technicians and like-minded musicians, who further help the business to provide a thorough, friendly and expert service to customers throughout Australia.
Meet The Team
Owner, chief technician and all round whizz at fixing stuff. Dick can advise you on any tech issues you may have and can literally talk your ear off if you get him started. Dick lives a rock star lifestyle on the weekend, playing bass for a band or two.
Tracy generally spends her time attempting to keep the office and workshop flowing as it should. Juggling accounts stuff, website prettifying, advertising, & keeping the plants watered, she is also in training to be a Turntable Technician.
The newest member to join the team is admin superstar and non-tech nerd Julia. You may have seen her drumming in any number of bands around town and now her smiling face is here to help with all of your enquiries and job bookings!
Resident barista Mark is the master of pimping turntables and speakers for the ultimate listening experience. His magical powers can bring hard rubbish turntables, toasted, baked and blown cones back to life in the blink of an eye!
How is it that the quietest member of the team makes the most noise? King of all things amplified, the very talented Riah will turn any busted amp into a dream machine of rock and roll bliss!
